“Trouble?” I said. “Never heard the word.”

“I have,” Pablo said into the PabloPhone. Fortunately, Granny couldn’t hear him.

“I’m trusting you, Daniel,” she said, putting on her helmet with the flames and grabbing her keys. “Stay right here at the kitchen table. Don’t move. And that goes for you too, Pablo.”

“No problemo,” he said into the straw. “The Pablo is digesting.”

“Me too,” I said, letting loose a little giccup just to emphasize the point.

Granny opened the back door and headed out to the garage. I heard her scooter engine rev up, then start to putt like it does when she backs out of the garage. Then it switched to its regular drone as she took off down the back alley.

I stayed still. I didn’t move a muscle. At least, I didn’t mean to.

But here’s a tip: When your eyeballs start growling and your nose starts bubbling and your fingers start buzzing and your knees start whistling, it’s really hard to stay still, even if you promised to.
